Goodman falls but isn’t hurt

Mayor Oscar Goodman fell but was not injured at a ceremony Friday night marking completion of the Fremont East entertainment district, a city spokesman said.

Goodman fell as he was preparing to throw a switch to light several 40-foot neon signs in the three-block district.

"He said his foot just gave out, he lost his balance and fell down," said city of Las Vegas communications director David Riggleman, who was with the mayor at the time. "He's fine. He got back on his feet, lit the lights, walked to his car and went home."

The mayor was at home resting late Friday night, Riggleman said.

Goodman, joined by City Council members Ricki Barlow and Gary Reese, was standing on a small stage at Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard when he fell.

Riggleman said the mayor, who suffers from gout, "had been on his feet all day long." Goodman had thrown out the first pitch at a baseball game before arriving at the Fremont East event. "He'll tell you, he's got bad feet," Riggleman said.

Goodman wore a small bandage on his forehead at the Fremont East event. Riggleman said it was from a medical procedure earlier in the day unrelated to the fall.
