Officer who shot at teens ID’d

A North Las Vegas police officer who interrupted a running gunbattle and fired at juvenile suspects in self-defense Wednesday evening has been identified as Michael Carmody.

Police arrested two 16-year-old boys in connection with the 7:30 p.m. shooting near Lake Mead Boulevard and D Street.

Carmody, an officer for nine years, was dispatched to the 400 block of Reeco Avenue after several residents called police and reported hearing gunfire.

Carmody arrived, heard gunfire and saw gun muzzles flashing with light, leading him to believe he was being fired upon, Redcay said. After seeing several suspects moving west and firing in his direction, Carmody drew his sidearm and fired shots in self-defense, Redcay said.

A second officer then arrived, and the two officers took the boys into custody, both of whom were armed with handguns. Police said several other suspects involved in the gunbattle fled before they could be taken into custody. Both juveniles were booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police did not release the names of the boys because they have not been charged as adults, a standard practice.
