Horse Racing: Sunday at Santa Anita Park
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 — 6½ furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
2 Timeless Indy — Won a gritty finish last time out; like the cutback in distance where he should be finishing well again.
4 Traweek — Has been claimed in two of his last three starts; makes his first start in the new barn of Kristin Mulhall.
Long Shot — 3 Zippingaroundtown
Race 2 — 7 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
2 Sir Barclay — He won for $20K and $25K so he won’t be afraid to face these tonight; Drayden Van Dyke replaces Rafael Bejarano.
5 Sudden Rumor — Sliding down the claiming ladder after being claimed by Brian Koriner 3 races ago; these are clearly his friends today.
Long Shot — 6 Coolington
Race 3 — 1 mile, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Larry Birdstone — Could be the shortest priced favorite on the card; lost by an inch in last and now facing an easier group.
3 Derby Glass — Has come up a little short in 3 starts so Ron Ellis puts blinkers on tonight; hoping to increase his focus just enough.
Long Shot — 5 Bula Bula
Race 4 — 1 1/16th miles, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Brave Act — Tiny edge in the hardest race on the card; his better surface is grass, but he’s capable on the ground too.
5 Silent Ruler — Doug O’Neill barn seems to be waking up some; he uses a lot of different riders, this time Kent Desormeaux.
Long Shot — 3 Northern Iowa
Race 5 — 6½ furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Q’ Viva — Teaser resume down the hill with three seconds in four starts over the course; needs to be in your exacta and trifecta.
3 Sidepocket Run — Like the cutback in distance from route to sprint; note that she is 0-for-15 on grass, but seems to finish well.
Long Shot — 2 Kantina Kowgirl
Race 6 — 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
3 Dixie Dame — In and outer has taken turns running well and not so well; put her on the lead and see what happens today.
2 Sweet Silver — As usual, Rafael Bejarano has a lot of live mounts on the card; one of these days he’s going to win 5 or 6 races.
Long Shot — 7 Powerful Girl
Race 7 — 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $58,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
3 Circling — That was one fast finish in her U.S. debut; shortens up in distance but did run mile races in Ireland, on the straightaway?
3 Nickels Wild — Finish well in last in first race off a 5-month hiatus; now switches to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
Long Shot — 8 Thewandaofu
Race 8 — 1 mile, $75,000 Santana Mile, 4-year-olds and up
9 Rousing Sermon — Tiny edge off a win last time in less that his best effort; he’ll probably need to do better to defeat these.
6 Galicado — Tepid favorite in an incredibly difficult heat; U.S. debut off a 10-month hiatus and races first time with Lasix.
Long Shot — 3 Blue Tone
Race 9 — 6½ furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
10 Young and Hungry — Will be heavily favored but this is no layover; is the third time a charm off of two straight close calls.
2 Tizzing — Really liked the debut albeit a fourth place finish; was slow early but seemed to pick it up when he got the hang of things.
Long Shot — 8 Best Two Minutes
Best Bet — 7 Larry Birdstone (race 3)
Santa Anita Saturday — Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/5/$33.40; Long Shots, 9/1/$12.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals — 905/240/$1,528.40; Long Shots, 454/64/$644.40; Best Bets, 55/21/$91.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY — #10 Awesome Venture (7/2) in race 7 at Fair Grounds. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, War Story ran third at Fair Grounds paying $2.80 to show. Stats - 45/33/$213.90.
