12-year-old wins spelling bee

An eighth-grader from Lyon County won the Nevada State Spelling Bee on Saturday.

Cheyenne Lawrence, 12, who attends Silver Stage Middle School in Silver Springs, spelled her final word, alluvium, to win the competition.

Forty-eight students competed in the spelling bee sponsored by the Review-Journal and held at Cimarron-Memorial High School.

Connor Dayton of Reno's Swope Middle School was runner-up.

It was Cheyenne's second year competing. The Review-Journal will send her to Washington, D.C., for the National Spelling Bee on May 30.
