A teenager swimming with friends drowned Thursday when she was sucked into an undertow at the Virgin River Dam near the northwest Arizona community of Littlefield.

The Mohave County Sheriff's office identified the victim as Alma Rosa Lujan, 14, of Scenic, Ariz.

Agency spokeswoman Sandy Edwards said deputies responded at 5 p.m. when advised that Lujan was pulled into a small underwater channel leading to the downstream side of the dam. After an extensive effort, Lujan's body was recovered late Thursday night.
