8-acre fire contained in northwest Las Vegas Valley

The Box Mine wildfire in the northwest valley has been fully contained, according to Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Kirsten Cannon.

Officials said no structures were threatened, and the cause of the fire, which burned nearly 8 acres, remained under investigation.

Investigators believe the grass-fueled blaze near Alexander Road and Cliff Shadows Parkway was caused by humans.

While the 2011 fire season has been relatively calm in Southern Nevada, the BLM reminded residents that restrictions are in place on federal lands.

Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire or stove fire, except a portable stove using gas, petroleum jelly or pressurized liquid fuel is prohibited.

Even smoking cigarettes outside an enclosed vehicle is banned. Other banned activities include welding or operating a cutting torch with an open flame; using explosives or fireworks; firing tracers; and operating an off-road vehicle without a spark arrestor.

Other federal agencies might have additional restrictions in place.
