9/11 events planned in the valley

Southern Nevada firefighters will ring the bells at Firefighters Memorial Park at 6:55 a.m. Friday to commemorate 9/11.

The short ceremony at the park, 6401 W. Oakey Blvd., will mark the 14th anniversary of the day when terrorists hijacked jets, destroyed the World Trade Center in New York and crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

The low-key event will be done in about 20 minutes. The ringing of the truck bells is a firefighter tradition that marks when someone has died.

When the Twin Towers collapsed, 343 firefighters died, part of nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks.

Flags at fire stations across the valley also will be lowered to half-mast.

And Palo Verde High School foreign language teacher Barbara Edwards, who died while on American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon, will be honored with an 8 a.m. flag ceremony at the school's soccer field.
