About 26 million Americans have diabetes, up 9 percent

ATLANTA -- U.S. health officials have raised their estimate of how many Americans have diabetes to nearly 26 million. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 1 in 12 Americans have diabetes, a disease in which the body has trouble processing sugar. The new figure marks a 9 percent increase from the 2008 estimate of 23.6 million.
