Another issue for Reid and Angle to gnaw on
Another campaign issue for the Reid-Angle campaign tussle may be in the wings.
Sen. Harry Reid this past week scheduled, possibly for Tuesday, a vote on the so-called DISCLOSE Act, which basically would obviate the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. FEC which overturned many of the free speech killing aspects of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law.
CQPolitics interprets this move and others as a chance “to pad Democrats’ stats before the November elections.”
Though much of the major liberal media across the country is all for this bill, which would largely gag corporations wishing to express campaign views while giving a free pass to unions and certain favored lobbying groups, Nevadans are evenly split on the question.
A Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey earlier this month found 43 percent agree with the Supreme Court while 42 percent disagreed. Republicans and independents agreed more. Democrats agreed less.
Democrats see this as a good issue for them even if it doesn’t pass.
The Heritage Foundation said of the bill, “The cloture vote will probably occur next Tuesday in a move that avoids committee hearings. If Reid can get 60 votes, then the Schumer/Van Hollen Sedition Act of 2010 will proceed to a vote. At that point, he will only need 51 senators who believe Congress has the ability to circumvent and restrict the First Amendment.”
It’s probably not a very sexy issue for Sharron Angle with joblessness rates above 14 percent, but it would be a decent secondary question if the two can be gotten together for a debate.
