Another term limits writ filed

Assembly District 8 candidate Kevin Child said today he has asked the Nevada Supreme Court to look at whether term limits should apply this election year to state legislators, not just to local politicians.

"What is good for the goose is good for the gander," said Child, a Republican who is challenging Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas.

Child said he filed a writ with the Supreme Court on Friday that requests the court also look at legislators when it examines term limit cases filed by Secretary of State Ross Miller against local government politicians.

He initially had filed a challenge against Buckley's right to run for another term, but that was rejected by the Clark County district attorney's office last week because Child filed it after a deadline.

Legislators are limited to 12 years in the same office, but then-Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa issued an opinion in 1996 that term limits for them did not begin until the election in 1998. Buckley was first elected in 1994, but under Del Papa's opinion can run for re-election for the last time this year.
