Applications received for state education superintendent
CARSON CITY -- A dozen candidates are being reviewed for the job of Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Gov. Brian Sandoval's office reported 15 applications had been received by last Friday's deadline. Of those, three did not meet statutory requirements .
Eight applicants are from Nevada, and seven are from out-of-state.
Background checks are being conducted as part of the review process. The names of the applicants are confidential until a list of semi-finalists is presented to the state Board of Education later this month.
The board will interview top candidates in public before recommending three for the governor's consideration. Sandoval hopes to make an appointment by March.
The new superintendent will replace Keith Rheault, who is retiring in April.
A new law gives the governor authority to appoint the superintendent.
