Arizona man’s son held in his slaying and blaze ignited at his Kingman home
KINGMAN, Ariz. -- Three gas cans were found in the north Kingman home that was set ablaze after its owner was shot and killed early Saturday morning, and the man's son was later arrested on murder charges.
A firearm was found next to the victim's partially burned body, covered with a sleeping bag in the living room of a mobile home in the 3000 block of Packard Avenue.
The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said an autopsy determined that gunshots to the neck and back, rather than fire, claimed the life of John Guerrero, 59.
Sheriff's Detective Jason Elsbury said neighbors indicated they saw the victim's son, Shawn Avery Guerrero, 26, pull into the driveway and enter the residence just before the fire.
"There was a loud noise which some neighbors described as thunder or an explosion," Elsbury said in the probable cause affidavit filed in Kingman Justice Court. "Smoke was then seen coming from inside the residence. The young man was then seen leaving the residence at a high rate of speed in a white Chevrolet Camaro."
Authorities said Guerrero was detained when the Camaro belonging to his slain father was stopped the next day in Tempe.
Guerrero was initially detained on misdemeanor warrants before first-degree murder, arson and other criminal charges were added, but the murder motive remains the focus of ongoing investigation.
Guerrero was accused of being involved in an incident at his mother's home in April. The woman called the Sheriff's Office to report her son had fired a bullet through her television set.
Authorities said Guerrero then attacked an arriving deputy and had to be shot with a Taser to be subdued and placed in custody.
