Army errors push Reno-Sparks flood plan back again

RENO - An ongoing effort to step up flood protection in the Reno-Sparks area is turning into a bit of a disaster itself.

City officials say congressional approval of the Truckee River flood plan has been pushed back at least until 2012 because of errors that were made while trying to rush the project's review.

The project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the latest problem stemmed from a series of mistakes made in hydraulic models. Roger Henderson told the Reno Gazette-Journal they intend to hire consultants to fix the problem by September.

Sparks City Councilman Ron Smith says the continued delay is unacceptable given the high risk of another flood like the one that caused nearly $700 million damage in 1997.
