Arrest report details officers’ actions to catch suspects

Two off-duty Las Vegas police officers were the ones responsible for catching two men who police said fled a violent home invasion in Henderson on Sunday.

The Henderson police arrest report for 38-year-old Carlos Chacon, one of the suspects, details the two officers' coordinated actions in capturing them.

Las Vegas police Sgt. Raymond Reyes was leaving his home in the neighborhood, near Stephanie Street and Warm Springs Road, Sunday afternoon when he saw Chacon and Nelson Abreus-Diaz, 39, jumping over a wall near his house.

Reyes, the report said, drove his car around the neighborhood and called police. Then he called one of his neighbors, another off-duty Las Vegas police officer identified in the report only as officer Scavone. One of the suspects had jumped into Scavone's backyard.

The two officers met on Stephanie Street across from the entrance to the neighborhood and waited. They saw Abreus-Diaz jump over another wall onto Stephanie Street. They caught him and held him until Henderson police arrived.

Scavone then returned home and found Chacon hiding in one of his bedroom closets, the arrest report said. Chacon "made an aggressive move," and the officer fired one round, striking the suspect in his left thigh, the report said.

After being treated at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus, Chacon was booked into the Henderson Detention Center.

Las Vegas police did not release details of the officers' employment, assignments or names on Monday. Police said Sunday that the officer who fired the round would be placed on paid routine administrative leave.

Chacon and Abreus-Diaz face charges of burglary, robbery with a deadly weapon, first-degree kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping in connection with the home invasion that led to their capture.

The arrest report said two suspects entered a home on the 1300 block of Sun Pillars Avenue about 2:20 p.m.

Homeowner James Buford told police he had driven up to his house and gotten out of his vehicle when one of the suspects entered his garage.

Buford was on the phone with his girlfriend, who heard him yell, "Get out of my house," according to the report. She called Henderson police.

The suspect had a gun and told Buford to get on the ground. The second suspect entered the garage with a Taser and used the device on Buford. They told Buford to give them his money, and he told them his wallet was in his vehicle. It contained about $2,000 in $100 bills, Buford told police.

As they told Buford to go inside to the master bedroom, they used the Taser two more times on him, the report said. In the bedroom, they took another $2,000 in $100 bills from a safe and several pieces of jewelry.

The suspects demanded more money, and Buford told them he had about $20,000 in $100 bills hidden in a pair of shorts in the closet.

He gave them the money, and they used plastic zip ties to bind Buford's hands and feet together.

Chacon and Abreus-Diaz were leaving through the garage when Henderson police arrived and saw them, the report said. An officer ordered them to get on the ground, but they ran back into the house, escaped through a back window and went over a wall, the report said.

Investigators found an open package of zip ties, a revolver and jewelry that belonged to Buford in the officer's backyard, the report said. A Taser was found in Buford's backyard

Chacon has a criminal record that includes charges in 2009 of burglary and felony theft, court records show.
