Arson damages Las Vegas historic site

An arsonist set fire to an antique couch and loom at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort on Thursday but rangers extinguished the blaze before it damaged a historic building.

A woman told rangers on noon Thursday that smoke was pouring from the old adobe building, which has the last remaining wall from the original 19th century fort. Two rangers used fire extinguishers to snuff out the flames engulfing a couch and charring an old loom.

Las Vegas fire investigators ruled it an arson and estimated the damage at about $50,000. Ranger Don Bolton said he was glad someone spotted the fire in time.

"Probably in another three to five minutes the building would've been completely gone," Bolton said.
