Assemblyman Stewart seeks re-election

CARSON CITY -- Lynn Stewart, who is the senior Republican assemblyman from Clark County, announced Monday that he is seeking re-election.

Stewart, 70, said he was a strong opponent of Democratic legislators' plans to raise taxes by $1.2 billion. He did, however, support extending $620 million in taxes that would have expired on June 30, 2011, after a Nevada Supreme Court decision prevented Gov. Brian Sandoval from using local revenue to balance the state budget.

"We held the line during the 2011 legislative session," said Stewart, the Assembly's assistant minority leader. "Not one single new tax was established. I am seeking re-election because the fight to improve education, limit government and prioritize spending continues. We must eliminate waste and ensure our priorities are funded first through a balanced and responsible budget."

Assembly District 22, in the southeastern part of urbanized Clark County and mainly in the southern half of Henderson, has 13,085 Republicans and 11,274 Democrats, according to the most recent active registered voter statistics.

Stewart is a lifelong resident of Southern Nevada who served three years in the Army, including a year as a transportation officer in Vietnam. He taught for 34 years at Boulder City High School. He is seeking a fourth term in the Assembly. Legislators are prohibited from serving more than six terms in the Assembly under the voter-approved term limits constitutional amendment.

"I raised my family here and am now watching my seven grandchildren grow up in our state," Stewart said. "If re-elected, I will continue to fight for the issues that matter most to our families."
