Authorities identify man who shot, wounded daughter before killing self

The man authorities say shot his daughter multiple times before taking his own life Tuesday night has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.

Police say 52-year-old Rene Espinal of Las Vegas shot his 19-year-old daughter several times in her torso before shooting himself in the head at the Regency Heights Apartments, located at 3650 E. Lake Mead Blvd., near Pecos Road.

Espinal and his daughter argued after he mentioned committing suicide. During the argument, he shot his daughter. He chased her into the courtyard and shot her several more times, police said.

Police believe Espinal then went to his car for more ammunition and shot himself.

Officers found Espinal, still clutching a gun, at about 6 p.m. Tuesday. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The daughter was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries, but officials said they expect her to survive.
