Avoid Tropicana intersection at Strip

You think traffic on the Strip is bad?

Starting tonight it's about to get worse.

Utility line installation work being done by the Clark County Department of Aviation on Tropicana Avenue is moving to the intersection with Las Vegas Boulevard.

Through the end of the month, traffic on Tropicana and the Strip will be reduced to two through lanes and one turn lane in all directions at the intersection, said Chris Jones, a spokesman for McCarran International Airport.

"Work will occur around the clock in order to finish this phase as quickly as possible, but through May 28 traffic in the aforementioned intersection will be significantly impacted by this road work," Jones said.

The 6-month utility line project, which stretches on Tropicana from Interstate 15 to Paradise Road, is needed to help power the new terminal being constructed at McCarran.

The lane closures coincide with other lane closures just north on Las Vegas Boulevard, between Harmon Avenue and Paris Drive.

Work there is being done to construct a pedestrian bridge that will extend over Las Vegas Boulevard as part of the CityCenter project.

Motorists can expect Las Vegas Boulevard to be reduced to one lane in each direction because of that construction from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, and from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. May 19 along with the work at the intersection of Tropicana.

On top of that, Jones said a second crew has begun working on Tropicana, just east of Koval Lane, on the utility project.

Motorists are being urged to use alternate routes.

The utility line project is expected to finish in late September, and so far the work is on schedule, Jones said.
