Aztecs in control in second semi

Third-seeded San Diego State has jumped out to a 19-point first half advantage and holds a 44-29 lead over No. 2 BYU in the second semifinal in the Mountain West Conference women’s tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Jene Morris has 16 points and Quenese Davis 13 for the Aztecs, who made 14 of 24 shots from the field.
San Diego State also knocked down 12 of 15 from the free-throw line.
Mindy Bonham has eight points for the Cougars, but the team committed 10 turnovers in the half.

Format trouble?

If BYU is unable to make a comeback, it will be the second team to lose with the double bye in the unique bracketing utilized in the MWC women’s tournament.
The top two seeds receive byes into the semifinals, while the No. 3 seed got a free pass into the second round.
TCU already lost in the first semifinal in its first game of the tournament, playing against a Utah team that had already played two games in the event.
BYU is seeing its first action now against San Diego State, which won its opener on Wednesday.
So much for protecting the top seeds.
