Bars’ two-hour closures sought

RENO -- Reno police are asking more than a dozen downtown bars to close for two hours at night so nearby residents can catch some sleep.

Police Chief Michael Poehlman says he wants the 15 bars in the west downtown closed permanently from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. to cut down on rowdy behavior and police overtime.

He says his officers respond six times more to downtown bars than any other businesses with liquor licenses, and the situation is unfair to residents disturbed by the noise.

The bars can stay open all night under current city ordinances.
