BLAZERS’ BAYLESS CASHES IN

The Suns provided Trail Blazers guard Jerryd Bayless with the opening, and he didn't let it go to waste.

With Phoenix leading Portland 71-66 with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter Saturday at Cox Pavilion, Suns guard D.J. Strawberry called a timeout his team didn't have. Technical foul.

Bayless, who already had 28 points at that time, made the free throw. Then Bayless drove to the basket and was fouled. He scored all four points on the possesion to bring the Blazers within a point.

With 18.6 seconds left, Bayless knocked down an 8-foot floater to give Portland a 74-73 victory.

Bayless, who led NBA Summer League scorers with 27.7 points per game before Saturday, finished finished with 36 points on 14-for-26 shooting. Amazingly, he had only nine points at halftime.

"Coach took me aside and told me to get it going, which is what I tried to do," said Bayless, who was acquired by the Blazers in a trade with Indiana, which drafted him 11th this year.

Portland won despite Bayless being its only scorer in double figures. The Suns had three — Alando Tucker (18 points), Strawberry (15) and Marcus Vinicius (10).

JUNK FOOD RULES

America is supposed to be on a health kick, right? Even McDonald's and Burger King offer chicken sandwiches, and everywhere else is supposed to be lo-cal, low carbs all the time.

Word didn't reach the Thomas & Mack Center/Cox Pavilion.

It's junk, junk, junk.

Not so bad if you plan to stay for a game or two. You eat before you arrive or after you leave.

But what if you paid $20 for an all-day pass and want to take advantage of it? Well, good luck eating that hot dog for lunch and then another couple for dinner. And don't forget the nachos.

A Subway is in the concourse, but it was closed. That entire area was blocked off.

When the summer league comes back next season, please, please either reopen Subway or expand the menu at the concession stand.
