RENO - Northern Nevada's Humboldt and Lander counties should be a little safer for outdoor enthusiasts with the closure of more than 100 dangerous abandoned mine sites.
The Bureau of Land Management says 148 sites have been closed, either by backfilling, installing gates or with polyurethane foam.
The project was part of $1.5 million in federal stimulus money received to permanently close dangerous abandoned mine sites in Northern Nevada.
A related project also funded by the 2009 American Reinvestment and Recovery Act closed 203 similar sites on BLM lands in Clark County.
