Borha shoots Utah to victory
Utah had possession in a tie game with 21 seconds to play and everyone in the building knew that Luke Nevill would get the ball.
That’s why the Utes ran a play to get Luca Drca a lane to drive to the basket.
Drca used a Nevill screen to open a path down the lane and when help came from the far side, Drca fired a pass to the wing and Lawrence Borha knocked down a 3-pointer with less than a second to play that gave the Utes a 61-58 victory over Texas Christian in the third quarterfinal of the Mountain West tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Borha and Nevill each finished with 10 points to lead the Utes. Borha added seven rebounds.
Nevill was limited to just 1 of 2 from the floor in 23 mintues of action.
Zvonko Buljan had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Horned Frogs, but Ronnie Moss missed a layup with 26 seconds remaining that could have put them in front.
Buljan had made a jump shot from the top of the key with 1:07 left to give TCU the lead, but Nevill made a pair of free throws on the other end to tie the score.
Utah will now play the winner of the New Mexico-Wyoming game.
There’s no crying in cheerleading
A Texas Christian cheerleader came very close to landing an attempted backflip squarely on her face during the halftime festivities.
Her real breakdown didn’t occur until she got back into her seat.
When she sat down, she immediately put her head in her hands and cried uncontrollably.
It didn’t affect her too badly, however.
Midway through the second half, she jovially yelled along with her fellow cheerleaders and band members as they told fouled-out Ute Kim Tillie to “Sit down, Freak!”
It’s About Time
Utah star Luke Nevill scored his first points on a dunk with 10:10 to play in the game.
He missed much of the first half with foul trouble, but was shut down by an aggressive TCU post defense for the nearly 10 minutes he went scoreless in the second half.
As soon as he caught the ball, the Utah fans were screaming, imploring the big center to go to the basket.
They got their wish, and he got a dunk.
Joanie Loves Kepkay?
The TCU band has been chanting “Chachi, Chachi” at Utah point guard Tyler Kepkay each time he goes to the free-throw line.
Apparently, they feel he bears a resemblance to Scott Baio.
It is a bit of a stretch, but you have to forgive them: How many of them were alive the last time Scott Baio was significant?
