Boy who drowned in backyard pool identified

A 2-year-old boy who died Sunday evening after drowning in a backyard pool has been identified as Geno Valerio.

The Clark County coroner's office released the name. A cause and manner has not yet been determined.

The incident happened just before 8 p.m. in the 4800 block of Santa Barbara Street, near U.S. Highway 95 and Tropicana Avenue, police said.

A family member called 911 after discovering the boy in the pool. Valerio had been in the pool for "quite some time," said officer Marcus Martin, a police spokesman.

"He was supposed to be in the tub," Martin said.

Police are investigating the incident. No abuse and neglect charges had been filed as of Monday morning.

Martin said he didn't know how many children lived at the home.
