Bureau of Land Management begins environmental study for mine in Elko County

ELKO - Officials with the U.S Bureau of Land Management will have three public meetings in August as they begin an environmental study for a proposed open pit gold mine in northeastern Nevada.

Newmont Mining Corp.'s Long Canyon Mine project would involve about 1,600 acres of public land on the east side of the Pequop Mountains, about 30 miles east of Wells in Elko County.

The purpose of the scoping period is to identify issues relevant to the project that should be addressed in the Environmental Impact Statement.

Public meetings will be Aug. 6 in Wendover, Aug. 7 in Elko and Aug. 8 in Wells.

Written comments will be accepted through Sept. 3.
