California fire making Nevada smoky
Southwest winds of up to 20 mph blew smoke from California's Zaca wildfire into Nevada on Wednesday, shrouding the Las Vegas skyline in a gray sea of ash particles.
As a result, visibility at McCarran International Airport was reduced to 10 miles and local air quality officials said the smoky conditions could increase ozone levels although they remained in the moderate range Tuesday afternoon.
Meteorologist Charlie Schlott at the National Weather Service in Las Vegas said smoke from the Zaca fire, 300 miles away in the Los Padres National Forest, had spread across Nevada.
"It depends on the wind flow. It's taking that stuff and blowing it over this way. There's not much we can do about it."
Today's forecast is for sunny skies with highs near 107. Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
