City performances, exhibits scheduled throughout summer

The city of Las Vegas Cultural Arts and Community Events offers a number of cultural performances and exhibits throughout the year. Here are some of the upcoming events (programs are subject to change). For more information, visit www.artslasvegas.org.

PERFORMANCES

n Rainbow Company Youth Theatre Presents "How I Became A Pirate" (all ages). Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St., 229-6383.

June 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 at 7 p.m. and June 5, 11 and 12 at 2 p.m.

Tickets: $3 children 12 years and younger; $5 ages 13-17 and seniors 62 and older; $7 adults.

Based on the popular picture book "How I Became a Pirate" by Melinda Long, this musical production takes its young hero on a wave of adventure. For tickets or more information, call 229-6553 or 229-6383, or go online to artslasvegas.org.

n The Poets' Corner (adults). West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd., 229-4800.

June 17, 7:30 p.m.

Free and open to the public.

Keith Brantley hosts a forum for established poets and open-microphone participants. For mature audiences.

n Contra Dancing (all ages). Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St., 229-6383.

Co-sponsored by the Southern Nevada Old Time Contra Dancers.

June 18; group lessons 6:30 p.m., dancing 7-10 p.m.

Fee: $7 adults; $5 members, students and military; $3 children under 16 and nondancing adults. Pay at the door.

Dance to the live music of an acoustic band playing joyful fiddle tunes, driving reels and a waltz or two. All dances are taught and called; newcomers and families are welcome. No need to bring a partner.

n Summer Youth Dance Camp (ages 11-18). Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St., 229-6383.

Wednesday-Saturday, July 6-30, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fee: $175; $25 discount during preregistration period.

Classes in ballet technique, modern, lyrical, jazz, contemporary jazz, Pilates and more for two groups -- intermediate and intermediate/advanced dancers. Auditions for placement June 25, 1-2:30 p.m. Preregistration June 1-11. Registration June 15-25.

Exhibitions

n "Classic Goodman: A History In Photographs of Mayor Oscar B. Goodman." Bridge Gallery, City Hall, 400 Stewart Ave.

Through June 30; Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Closed holidays.

Free admission.

This exhibit showcases photos of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman taken by photographers from the Las Vegas News Bureau of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority during the mayor's three terms in office. Visitors may reach the gallery through the second floor of the Las Vegas City Hall parking garage on the southeast corner of Stewart Avenue and Fourth Street. Parking is by paid meter only. Each year the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission and the city of Las Vegas sponsor the "Celebrating Life!" fine arts competition to recognize the talents of Las Vegas artists. Clark County residents age 50 or better are invited to enter their original works in the annual juried event, The competition takes place in May. Art media categories include drawing and pastel, mixed media, painting, sculpture and ceramics, watercolor and gouache, and photography.

n "Great Basin Exteriors: A Photographic Survey" (all ages). Historic Fifth Street School Gallery, 401 S. Fourth St.

Through July 10, by appointment.

Reception and artist lecture, 5:30-
7:30 p.m. Thursday.

This exhibit examines loss, change and abandonment in the American West. It features 30 photographs by Adam Jahiel, Daniel Cheek and Nolan Preece, who have independently photographed subjects that are changing or quickly disappearing from the Western landscape. Organized by the Nevada Arts Council, this exhibit is one of the traveling exhibits in the Nevada Touring Initiative -- Traveling Exhibit Program, and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nevada State Legislature.

"Hot Glass: Art and Architectural Glass" from Stacey Neff and the New Mexico Experimental Glass Workshop features new ideas for the very old material of glass. The New Mexico Experimental Glass Workshop is dedicated to fostering the development of new art and architectural glass from recycled material. Artists included in the exhibit are Martin Horowitz, Dana Newman, Sam Scott and Stacey Neff.
