Clark County Commission races set

Thirteen candidates filed to fill four seats on Clark County Commission seats.

The last day to file with the county election department was Friday.

But only two of the races will appear on the June 12 primary ballot.

In District B, Republican challengers Ruth Johnson, who served three terms on the Clark County School Board, and Jon Blackwell will square off to decide who moves on to the Nov. 6 general election.

The winner will face Democratic incumbent Tom Collins and Warren Markowitz of the Independent American Party. Collins is seeking his third term representing District B, which includes North Las Vegas, Mesquite and other northeast parts of the county.

In District C in Summerlin, Republicans Craig Lake, a former congressional candidate, and Gary Hosea, who unsuccessfully ran for County Commission in 2008, are vying for a chance to meet Democratic incumbent Larry Brown and Independent American Party candidate Brad Barnhill. Brown is seeking his second term on the commission to represent the Summerlin district.

The general election ballots are set for Districts A and D.

In District A, Democratic incumbent Steve Sisolak will face Republican challenger Barry Herr and Brian Brassfield with the Independent American Party. Sisolak, whose district includes Henderson, seeks his second term as commissioner.

In District D, Democratic incumbent Lawrence Weekly will face the youngest candidate of the County Commission races. His challenger, Wesley Cornwell, is a 20-year-old Republican whose 21st birthday is one month before the primary.

Weekly has been in the county office since 2007 and was a Las Vegas City Council member before that. His district includes some of the downtown Las Vegas area and West Las Vegas in District D.

A County Commission term is four years and pays $72,488 annually.
