Clark County Commissioner Brown files for re-election
Clark County Commissioner Larry Brown filed for re-election early Monday morning.
Brown, 54, is seeking his second term on the commission representing District C, which includes the Summerlin area.
"It will take a lot of hard work," Brown said of his re-election campaign. "We've come through some difficult times in the county with budget challenges."
The county is working to fill a $42 million budget gap for fiscal year 2012.
Brown, a Democrat, will face off against Republican challenger Gary Hosea, who unsuccessfully ran for County Commission in 2008.
Brown is one of four commissioners up for re-election and the first to file. Commissioners Steve Sisolak, Tom Collins and Lawrence Weekly are all gearing up for the campaign season.
Candidates have through March 16 to file in races statewide for the June 12 primary election. Seats up for grabs include U.S. Senate, state Senate and Assembly and the Clark County School District, among others.
Larry Lomax, the county's registrar of voters, said it was a slow start Monday morning as only 12 candidates had filed for statewide races in the first hour and a half at the government center.
Dan Hart, a political consultant and Brown's campaign manager, attributed the lack of candidates to the economy.
"Economic conditions are such that people can't raise money," Hart said. "Traditional donors have less to give."
