Comment period on Las Vegas water pipeline proposal extended
Federal land managers have extended the comment period by a month on a proposed Las Vegas water pipeline that critics say will have drastic environmental and economic impacts for several rural valleys in Utah and Nevada.
Bureau of Land Management officials say the public now has until Oct. 11 instead of Sept. 9 to comment on the agency's draft environmental impact statement for the project. The BLM extended the deadline at the request of critics of the plan, who said more time was needed because of the technical nature of the document.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority has applied for water rights in several basins, including Snake Valley along the Utah-Nevada line. The plans call for transporting the water to Las Vegas via a 285-mile pipeline.
