Commentator arrested on gun, drug charges

RENO -- A 70-year-old Nevada radio commentator who goes by the on-air name Travus T. Hipp and describes himself as the "poor hippie's Paul Harvey" was arrested Thursday on weapon and drug charges.

Hipp's real name is Chandler A. Laughlin. He's known for his libertarian views and often criticizes government in his syndicated commentaries that run mostly in California.

His arrest was the result of a yearlong investigation into allegations he sold marijuana out of his home in Silver City, south of historic Virginia City, Lyon County Sheriff's Detective Ryan Powell said.

Deputies served a search warrant at his home Thursday and recovered 4 ounces of marijuana, 3 ounces of peyote, a handgun and drug paraphernalia, Powell said.

Hipp said he has had a medical marijuana card from California for several years. He denied selling drugs.
