Commission names interim county clerk

Diana Alba was appointed by the Clark County Commission today to fill the remaining term of Shirley Parraguirre, the 11-year county clerk who died Aug. 30.

Alba, who started as a District Court clerk and worked her way up through a variety of supervisory jobs, will hold the position until someone is elected in fall 2010 and takes office in January 2011.

“Ms. Alba has been a dedicated public servant in that office for more than two decades and is someone who will work to ensure that residents and tourists continue to receive a high level of customer service,” said commission Chairman Rory Reid.

Alba, who has run the office since Parraguirre’s death, has been assistant county clerk since November 2000. She served as a member of the Nevada court staff faculty in 2001 and 2005 and has sat on a variety of committees to improve county clerks' offices throughout the state.

"Shirley's passing has been difficult for those of us who worked closely with her,” Alba said. “Nevertheless, I am looking forward to bringing to completion several initiatives Shirley and I have been working on this past year."

Parraguirre, credited with ushering her office into the digital age and expanding services to meet increasing demand, died of leukemia at the age of 69.
