Community center security guard shot, killed
Las Vegas police are investigating a shooting late Sunday that left a community center security guard dead and three suspects at large.
Police said the shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. outside Pearson Community Center, 1625 W. Carey Ave., near Comstock Drive. A witness told police that three men shot the guard multiple times and fled, police said.
No suspects were in custody, said homicide Lt. Lew Roberts, and police did not know the motive for the slaying.
"It didn't look like they were trying to break in," Roberts said. "We don't think robbery was the motive. It could just be a crazy, senseless act of violence."
Lynn Strocchia, chief executive officer of Special Operations Associates Inc., a Las Vegas security services company, confirmed that an employee was killed while patrolling the community center.
She declined to release the man's name before the Clark County coroner's office identifies him.
"It's still under investigation with Metro, and family members haven't been notified," she said. "We are devastated by it. The man was just doing his job."
Around noon Monday, the center reopened to the public, broken glass and bullet holes visible on the outside.
"We're replacing glass and repairing any (bullet) holes," county spokeswoman Jennifer Knight said Monday afternoon.
The county is reviewing security procedures to assess whether additional security is needed, Knight said .
She said it was important to note that the shooting took place after business hours.
"It didn't happen while the center was open," Knight said. "We want to let people know it's safe to come back."
