Construction worker’s death investigated
A construction worker died Monday morning at the Union Park redevelopment site in downtown Las Vegas, two officials said.
The man's identity and age were not released. Tim Szymanski, spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the site near Bonneville Avenue and Grand Central Parkway to check on a report of an injured man at about 7:45 a.m.
The man, who had been working with a concrete pipe in a 4-foot-deep trench, was dead when firefighters arrived, Szymanski said.
"We're not sure exactly what happened," he said. "We're not sure if he was hit in the head (with the concrete pipe) or what exactly happened."
Szymanski said the invest-igation has been passed over to the state's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA.
Elisabeth Shurtleff, a spokeswoman with the Nevada Department of Business and Industry, confirmed there was a death at Union Park and that OSHA is investigating. She said she wouldn't comment further because the investigation is continuing.
Union Park is a 61-acre former railroad yard. Last month marked the start of a sewer and infrastructure installation project to serve the $9 billion urban center.
