Convicted killer gets maximum 34 years to life behind bars

A District Court judge on Wednesday gave the maximum sentence to a 24-year-old man convicted of murder.

Judge Douglas Smith sentenced Carlos Orellana to 34 years to life in prison for the Feb. 1, 2009, shooting death of model and aspiring football player Brandon Gahagan outside a restaurant.

A jury convicted Orellana in March of second-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon and attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon.

Gahagan, 21, was shot outside Olive Mediterranean Grill and Hookah Bar on Sunset Road, near Sandhill Road.

The shooting followed a fight outside the restaurant between Gahagan and another man.

Orellana also wounded a man during the shooting, according to court records.

Prosecutors had sought a first-degree murder conviction against Orellana, which would have garnered him even more prison time. Prosecutor Joshua Tomsheck asked Smith to sentence Orellana to the maximum term.
