Cooling stations give shelter from heat

Several cooling stations are being opened today as temperatures are expected to meet or exceed 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The stations and their hours are:

■ Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St., near Flamingo Road and Maryland Parkway, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

■ Dula gymnasium, 441 E. Bonanza Road, near Las Vegas Boulevard North, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

■ Hollywood Recreation Center, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd., near Charleston Boulevard, between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

■ Pearson Community Center, 1625 W. Carey Ave., at Martin Luther King Boulevard, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

■ Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., near Boulder Highway and Major Avenue, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

■ Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, near Desert Inn Road, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

■ Walnut Recreation Center, 3075 N. Walnut Ave., near Cheyenne Avenue, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Three stations are open every day of the week. Their locations and hours are:

■ Catholic Charities, 1501 N. Las Vegas Blvd., at Owens Avenue, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

■ Salvation Army, 31 W. Owens Ave., near Las Vegas Boulevard North, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

■ Shade Tree, 1 W. Owens Ave., at Las Vegas Boulevard North, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The weather service issued an excessive heat warning for much of Southern Nevada between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today . The warning is in effect for areas below 4,000 feet. Temperatures are expected to be around 107 degrees in the valley, with highs reaching 112 along the Colorado River.

Temperatures are expected to cool off slightly Sunday, with highs around 103. Monday will be considerably cooler, with highs around 95.
