Coroner’s office identifies apartment slaying victim

The 37-year-old man slain Monday at an east valley apartment complex in what Las Vegas police suspect was a drug-related shooting was identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Norman Mayes.

The office said Tuesday that the Las Vegas man was shot in the head multiple times.

Police are investigating a possible drug connection between Mayes and the suspects, Lt. Lew Roberts said.

A woman was shot in the face in the incident. She is expected to survive, Roberts said. As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests had been made.

Police received reports of a shooting at 12:28 p.m. at the Pacific Harbors at Sunrise apartments, 5150 E. Sahara Ave., near Nellis Boulevard. Police found Mayes dead in an apartment and the injured woman.

Witnesses told police three men had fled the scene and described them as young with thin builds. Their heights were estimated at between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet tall. They were black, witnesses said.

Police said one of them might have been wearing a blue jacket. They were seen headed north on Nellis.

Anyone with information on the crimes is encouraged to call the homicide section at 88-3521 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 385-5555.
