Cosmetic surgeon’s license suspended

The Nevada Board of Medical Examiners suspended the license of cosmetic doctor Sean Phong-Quoc Su on Tuesday, fearing that more patients might be harmed if he were allowed to perform procedures while the board investigates his level of competency. The investigation stems from two complaints from patients treated by Su at his Skin Body Institute.

One woman won a free breast augmentation from her fitness club in April, but the procedure performed by Su raised questions about his qualifications. The procedure took eight hours, and because Su used local anesthesia, the woman suffered a great deal of pain, according to a Board of Medical Examiners' report. Also, the report said, the implant was too large for the pocket created for the augmentation.

The woman returned to Su after the implant began to protrude from an incision. She underwent another eight-hour surgery with local anesthesia, but the problem still wasn't fixed, the report said. She was treated at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

The Sunrise surgeons said Su's incisions were three times longer than they should have been, according to the report. They also found "an inexplicable mass of sutures in tissue" along the woman's chest wall.

A second patient sought to enhance her upper and lower eyelids in January. During the procedure, her skin was burned by the laser light, "resulting in what appears to be permanent damage to the tissues and permanent redness and discoloration" around the eyes.

The board also said that Su has not been cooperative during the investigation.
