Councilwoman asks for responses to Postal Service
August 4, 2009 - 9:00 pm
Las Vegas Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian on Monday urged people to weigh in on the proposed closing of the Garside Station, one of five post offices in Southern Nevada that might be closed to cut U.S. Postal Service costs.
"The closure of the Garside Station will no doubt impact the residents of Ward 1 who live close by," Tarkanian said in a statement. "If residents have a strong opinion on this matter, it is important that they act quickly."
A questionnaire about the proposed closings is due today. To get a copy, call Tarkanian's office at 229-2299 or the Postal Service at 361-9204.
The locations being considered for closure are Garside, at 1801 S. Decatur Blvd.; Desert Inn Retail Unit, 2478 E. Desert Inn Road; Huntridge Station, 3115 Olive St.; King Station, 1801 N. Martin Luther King Blvd.; and Strip Station, 3100 Industrial Road.
Nationwide, the Postal Service is studying 3,100 offices for possible closure to make up for lower mail volume and projected budget holes. A 15 percent drop in mail volume has occurred, and the service expects a $6.5 billion revenue loss this year.
It operates 32,741 post offices across the nation, including 57 in the Las Vegas Valley.
