Day 2: All quiet so far
December 9, 2008 - 12:28 pm
As negotiations no doubt continue in several private suites at
Bellagio, Day 2 of baseball's annual Winter Meetings got off to a slow
start in the Bellagio Ballroom, which is serving as a work room for the
media. It is also the site of all news conferences and announcements
of free-agent signings and trades.
While several Web sites are reporting the Dodgers have agreed to a 3-year,
$17 million deal with third baseman Casey Blake and a 1-year deal with
infielder Mark Lorettaa, no announcement has been made yet.
The same goes for the reported 3-year, $37 million deal between closer
Francisco Rodriguez and the New York Mets.
Another report said the Cubs were not close to a deal with the Padres for
pitcher Jake Peavy, who reportedly attended former teammate Greg Maddux's
retirement news conference Monday here, but stayed out of sight behind the
curtain.
Other rumors include Jason Giambi returning to the Oakland Athletics, the Braves and Royals talking swap of outfielder Jeff Francouer for pitcher Zack Greinke and the Indians being close to a deal that would land closer Kerry Wood.
