Democrats dominate county policy

The Clark County Commission has all Democrats for the first time in 40 years.

Two Democratic newcomers and two incumbents were sworn in Monday, creating the first all-Democratic commission since 1969.

Steve Sisolak, a former university regent, and Larry Brown, a former Las Vegas city councilman, began their first terms Monday.

Although they belong to the same party, their styles and personalities sharply contrast.

During his first commission meeting, Brown barely said a word, choosing instead to get a quiet feel for being part of the state's most powerful local governmental body. Sisolak chimed in during several debates, signaling that he would be forceful and talkative.

"First meeting -- listen, learn and get accustomed to the chairman's style and some of my colleagues," Brown said. "I will actively speak when I need to."

Brown said he is knowledgeable about issues in the northwest area, which he served as a city councilman. But with countywide issues, he faces a learning curve, he said.

Sisolak said he felt comfortable the moment he sat at the dais because it didn't seem much different from being a regent. Both the commission and the regents' board set policies, he said.

"I'm not afraid to give an opinion or ask a question," Sisolak said.

Commissioners Tom Collins and Lawrence Weekly were re-elected in November. They join incumbents Rory Reid, Chris Giunchigliani and Susan Brager.

Reid will remain chairman, making him the first commissioner in 50 years to hold that title for three consecutive terms.

Susan Brager was chosen as vice chairwoman.

"I'm looking forward to my new role on the commission," Brager said in a written statement. "I am confident that together we will overcome the many challenges before us."
