Deputy investigated in fight

CARSON CITY -- An off-duty Carson City sheriff's deputy accused of assaulting a man outside a bar on Christmas Eve is the target of an internal investigation, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

An Old Globe bar patron told investigators that the deputy grabbed him from behind in a chokehold and threw him to the ground. The patron reported that he suffered at least one broken rib.

The deputy told officers that the man confronted him outside the bar, and he threw him to the ground in self defense and walked away.

The deputy, a seven-year veteran, was not identified.

The fight is believed to have been prompted by the patron's former wife, who now is dating the deputy, the Nevada Appeal reported.
