Dog dies in Henderson house fire

A Thursday fire in Henderson destroyed a $400,000 home, officials said.

The Henderson Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at 2731 Evergreen Oaks Drive, near Hampton Road and Anthem Parkway, at 1:57 a.m., officials said.

A family pet alerted the homeowner, who had been asleep, officials said.

The owner fled the home and notified a neighbor, who called 911.

It took firefighters 50 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which had engulfed the structure. Firefighters were forced to battle the fire from outside the home.

The cause is believed to be accidental and the home is considered a total loss. No people were injured. One dog died in the fire.

The American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner.
