Drought in Carson Valley causes hay shortage, affects livestock
Ranchers and farmers in Nevada's Carson Valley say they've never seen their local river as dry as it is now.
Old-timers tell the Record-Courier of Gardnerville that winter provided little precipitation for the now bone-dry East Fork of the Carson River.
The drought has resulted in a shortage of hay. Ranchers say it's forcing them to sell livestock months ahead of schedule. In the Carson Valley, 50 miles south of Reno, overall hay production is down about a third from normal.
