Elko County deputy upgraded after being shot five times

A Nevada sheriff's deputy is out of intensive care at a Utah hospital where he is being treated after being shot five times during a confrontation with a man at a home in rural Wells.

The Elko Daily Free Press reported Wednesday that Elko County Sheriff's Deputy Lenwood VanNatter was upgraded to fair condition at the University of Utah Hospital.

VanNatter was flown about 180 miles to the Salt Lake City hospital after being wounded in the leg, hip and chest in last Thursday's shooting. Officials said ballistic vest prevented a bullet from penetrating his torso.

Peter Mark Coca, 43, alleged to be the gunman, surrendered early Saturday.

Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts said Coca is being treated for an unspecified medical condition at the Nevada State Prison infirmary in Carson City.
