Elko vandals get fines, jail term

ELKO -- Three men caught breaking into the Ruby View Golf Course in September 2006 with a note mocking police in their pocket have been sentenced in Elko.

Anthony Craig Mathews, 19, was ordered to serve nine months in jail and pay more than $13,000 in restitution for his role in the vandalism.

Cody Aaron Koplin, 21, and William Lee Hensley, 20, were given suspended sentences and fines by District Judge Mike Memeo on Wednesday.

In the note, the men said, "We also want to make the public aware of our city's inadequate law enforcement, and our ability to act with impunity ... very rarely does sheer incompetence actually make our lives easier."

All three were caught in the act and arrested after a nearby resident reported hearing unusual noises, police said.
