Ex-LV officer convicted of molesting girls

A former Las Vegas police officer charged with molesting two girls during his time on the force accepted a plea agreement Monday.

Richard Gagnon entered an Alford plea to two counts of attempted lewdness with a child under 14 years of age. This type of plea means a defendant doesn't admit wrongdoing but acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence to prove their case.

Gagnon was arrested in December by North Las Vegas police and charged with 26 counts of lewdness with a minor under 14, according to court documents.

The arrest came after Gagnon resigned from the Metropolitan Police Department in May 2006, but the charges stem from incidents between 2001 and 2003 when Gagnon was an officer.

Deputy District Attorney Jay P. Raman said prosecutors would not oppose concurrent sentences.

The charge Gagnon pleaded to comes with a minimum sentence of two years and maximum of 20 years in prison, Raman said. Gagnon is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 20.
