Exhibit focuses on science of parasites

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum in downtown Las Vegas hopes to "get under the skin" of its guests this summer with its new exhibit "Eww! What's Eating You?"

The Engelstad Family Foundation Special Exhibition Series presents the exhibit, which delves into the science of parasites and how many prey on humans to successfully complete their life cycles. The subject is shared in a carnival atmosphere setting that allows guests to explore the world of parasites through midway games, simulated carnival rides, interactive displays and colorful models.

Guests also will recognize a familiar face in Las Vegas comedian Carrot Top, who is seen and heard throughout the exhibit as the carnival barker.

"Parasites might be a little gross to talk about, but complex and fascinating science exists in the relationships between parasites and humans," said Marilyn Gillespie, executive director of the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. " 'Eww! What's Eating You?' digs into the ancient beginnings of human-parasite interactions and guides visitors through modern tales, including cutting-edge medical applications. It's a really unique and engaging way to inform, educate and entertain. "

The 5,000-square-foot exhibit was produced by Las Vegas-based Exhibit IQ and is being sponsored by Western Exterminator Co.

Located at 900 N. Las Vegas Blvd., the Las Vegas Natural History Museum opened in 1991 and is a private, nonprofit institution dedicated to educating children, adults and families in the natural sciences, both past and present. Through its interactive exhibits, educational programs and the preservation of its collections, the museum strives to instill an understanding and appreciation of the world's wildlife, ecosystems and cultures.

Admission is $10 for adults; $8 for students, seniors and military; and $5 for children ages 3-11. Children age 2 and under are free. Admission includes access to the entire museum.
