Extra helpings of English, math and science

Wanting to lessen the pain of budget cuts, Clark County school officials are looking at ways to offer more high school classes next year, but at a price.

Extra offerings in the core subjects, such as English, math and science, would be made available before or after the school day if there’s enough interest, meaning at least 25 students per class or a maximum of 30 students per class.

Michael Rodriguez, a school district spokesman, doubted that electives such as drama or wood-working would be offered through the plan, but it would provide greater flexibility in the school schedule.

Rodriguez gave the example of a group of honors students wanting to take an advanced placement course.

While the plan is still tentative, Rodriguez said the fees might be around $150 a class per semester or $300 for the school year.

“We’re still working out the kinks,” he added.
