Fall from escalator kills man

A 22-year-old Las Vegas man was killed just after midnight Wednesday after falling off the escalator that leads to a Las Vegas Boulevard overpass between the MGM Grand and New York-New York, authorities said.

Anthony Andrini might have been drinking and was surfing the escalator by sliding down the arm rails, said his mother, Renee Andrini. He had only proceeded four feet down when he toppled over backwards, fell to the sidewalk and broke his neck, she said.

The Clark County coroner's office ruled his death an accident. The cause of death was multiple blunt-force injuries from the fall. The incident occurred at 12:13 a.m. Thursday, according to the coroner's office.

Las Vegas police said they did not have a record of the incident.

Renee Andrini said her son was only a few days from going to Reno for his sister's wedding. She begged parents to teach their children so that they might learn from her son's mistake.

"Maybe some good can come from it," the middle school teacher said.
